One of the most outstanding palm oil facts is that there are a great number of products that include it among their ingredients, making it an oil that has a lot to offer. You may have thought of salads and French fries, but palm oil is present in many more products than you can imagine. Margarine, mayonnaise, pasta, dressings, bakery products, cakes, ice cream, chocolates and powdered milk are just some of the large list of food products that contain it. Many are surprised to learn that palm oil is also used in the production of cleaning products, cosmetics and even to produce biofuels. EPOA is responsible for promoting its sustainable adoption within the European market. Our mission is to demonstrate that through a coordinated effort between private companies, NGOs and governments a sustainable product can be achieved.
Why is it the most versatile edible vegetable oil?
One of the most predominant characteristics of palm oil is that it comes from a palm tree (Elaeis guineensis) capable of producing up to 40 kilograms of oil per year. It also offers a superior yield per hectare of land planted. While palm oil supplies 35% of all world demand, it occupies only 10% of all land used for oil crops. This means that in order to produce the same amount of other edible vegetable oils such as sunflower, soybean or canola, 4 to 10 more hectares of land would be needed. In addition, the process of harvesting and producing palm oil is considerably simpler than other oils. This makes it an affordable oil because of its low cost and its many advantages.
Impact on the European market
The countries that conform to the European community are among the largest consumers of palm oil. Over the years they have recognized the importance of this oil substance in the production of many products and have decided to become part of it. EPOA brings together a number of European national associations of palm oil producers with the aim of motivating sustainable production free of damage to the environment and its biodiversity. Through the stories of those people and initiatives that make a sustainable product possible, they manage to show the great importance of preserving the ecosystems that coexist with the oil palm farms. It is important that more and more people, companies and governments join this initiative that seeks to promote development while protecting our planet.
